XPERIA2_04Well, no, it is not the last Windows Mobile smart phone ever. We will definitely be seeing a lot more WinMo devices; but for now, the XPERIA X2 stands as Sony Ericsson’s last Windows Mobile device as they focus their products on other operating software. So far they have an Android and an S60 in the works, perhaps we will see another WinMo from Sony Ericsson once the new version 7 actually comes out. For being the last WinMo device in SE’s lot, and for having the XPERIA brand, the X2 still pales in comparison to other 3G phones. At least when you compare it to other WinMo devices, the X2 holds out among the top.

Good for Windows

While not everyone loves the WinMo OS; in fact, some people just hate it, there is still a lot of great functionality to be found in Windows Mobile. The first is with the Pocket Office applications. As Windows document formats are the standard file formats being used, having a reader and editor on your mobile is quite useful. This also sees the application of the full slide out QWERTY keyboard on the X2. The rest of WinMo functions are pretty standard, from the Media Player to the newly created application store. Do not expect finger gestures when navigating this OS since it is reliant on the use of a stylus. Particularly when it comes to the narrow bars you have to tap. With that said, this stylus based OS also requires a resistive touch screen.

Dictating the Hardware

The resistive touch screen and the full keyboard are mostly due to the WinMo OS. At least the screen is a big 3.5 inch 800 x 480 display with 16 million colours. The phone also has an  8 mega pixel camera and all the usual 3G  features such as quad band network capability and various connectivity options. Expect the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 to be released at the end of this year.
